Alright, let's give this posting thing a shot.
Last night, I saw "Let the Right One In" which is a Swedish vampire film. I was impressed with this movie in so many ways. The vampire is not sparkly, not a leather clad temptress or gothic chic yet not a ravening monster. This is very much a Nosferatu and so gloriously inhumanly
human.
The film tells us the story of Oskar, a twelve year old boy from a broken home who suffers from bullying at school. He befriends the 'about 12' year old Ely who moves in next door. Their interactions are just beautiful, with the way Ely tries to get Oskar to stand up for himself. I was especially taken with their use of Morse code to tap on each other's walls, and the way Oskar painstakingly copies out a cheat sheet for Ely. Oskar eventually comes to realize that his new friend is a vampire.
Make no mistake though, this is not a feel good or happy movie. Ely's existence as a vampire is harsh, gross and above all else lonely. They don't sugercoat the fact that Ely is the undead. And as sweet as the two are together, there is the hint of wrongness that threads through. It's handled tastefully, but while the two don't have a sexual relationship per se, neither can it be considered a platonic one.
There were so many great moments in this film, ones that I truly don't wish to spoil but that I nonetheless want to enthuse over. This movie will kick you in the gut, pull on your heartstrimgs and then make you go awwww.
This movie is subtle, this movie is creepy and this movie is brilliant.
This movie is also cold. From the snowy winter setting to the loneliness of Ely's existence and the bleakness of Oskar's life, I was left absolutely, delightfully chilled.
"Lasciami Entrare - clip" shows just one of the powerful moments in the movie without being horribly spoilery. I can't say whether it would have more effect watching it in the course of the movie or beforehand. I will say that it's what prompted my dh to go get the movie, and I can nearly guarantee it'll do the same for you. Watch it.
